[An Update on Next.js's App Router](https://nextjs.org/blog/june-2023-update) — The [‘app router’](https://nextjs.org/docs/app) in Next.js 13+ offers a new approach for structuring Next apps and is recommended for all new ones going forward (it became stable [in Next.js 13.4](https://nextjs.org/blog/next-13-4) last month). This post provides a welcome update on how the project sees the feature evolving and how the team is continuing to integrate and collaborate with React generally.

📅 [React Jam: A Gamejam for React Developers](https://reactjam.com/) — React probably isn’t the first option you think of for building a game, but this online event hopes to change that, or at least expand your horizons. [Game jams](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_jam) are popular events for developing small games to a deadline, and they’ve got some prizes and judges lined up. It starts on July 20.

Add MFA, SSO, biometrics and advanced threat detection with just a few clicks. Put FusionAuth to work for you.

▶[Don't Follow This Bad React Advice](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlU9vznPWIk) — Jack tackles three commonly seen pieces of React advice that you should think about before following blindly: avoiding the spread operator, not to use useMemo, and only using the updating variant of a useState state setter. Most boolean advice is junk advice, says Jack.

**IN BRIEF:**

- Dan Abramov is [🐦 feeling burned out](https://twitter.com/dan_abramov/status/1673394979106856960) on programming discourse. It's certainly been a heavy few weeks for React.
- Talking of which, Astro co-creator sparked off a fair bit of discourse with the observation that the [React Canary releases](https://react.dev/blog/2023/05/03/react-canaries) are [🐦 "_not_ stable and probably shouldn't be used in production."](https://twitter.com/FredKSchott/status/1673342700651704330) This seems obvious, but due to Next.js, folks may be relying on them without realizing.
- Alex Graveley [🐦 got about](https://twitter.com/alexgraveley/status/1671213996735594503) $20k for his work in creating GitHub Copilot, and it turns out Pete Hunt [🐦 got about](https://twitter.com/floydophone/status/1671215745877803017) $20k for his early work on React too.
- The creator of [Ink](https://github.com/vadimdemedes/ink), a way to build CLI apps with React, is pondering [how to generate income from open source](https://vadimdemedes.com/posts/generating-income-from-open-source) and looking at what other projects in the space are doing to stay afloat.

▶[React Server Components from Scratch: The Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aD58kGBJYc) — Dan Abramov recently released [an introduction to RSCs](https://github.com/reactwg/server-components/discussions/5) built around reimplementing them from scratch. He asked on Twitter if anyone could record the post in video form and Jesse stepped up with a little 'dramatic reading' for added effect.

[Things You Might Not Know About Next.js's Image Component](https://dev.to/alex_barashkov/things-you-might-not-know-about-next-image-5go8) — Next.js’s [Image](https://nextjs.org/docs/app/building-your-application/optimizing/images) component has a range of useful capabilities of which you may not be aware.

💌 [MJML: The Responsive Email Framework](https://mjml.io/) — HTML emails are a nightmare to code (believe us!) but MJML provides a component-based framework to make it less daunting if you don’t read [CanIEmail](https://www.caniemail.com/) on a regular basis. To bring React into the picture, you then need [Faire’s mjml-react](https://github.com/Faire/mjml-react) so you can create HTML emails with React components.
